Witching Chronicles: Exploring Sun Fall Down’s Burn

Very interesting band from Milan, Italy. Sun Fall Down called the album Burn and it’s their first full one. Nine tracks plus a short intro on the digital version.

The whole thing is built around an astronaut floating in black space with a sun in his hands. The artwork and lyrics make it clear, it’s about trying to sort your own head out while life feels like it’s on fire. Light and dark crashing together, hope and pain, the normal daily mess. It works without feeling fake or forced.

Music-wise it’s late 90s / early 2000s stuff. Grunge crunch mixed with dark atmospheres and some old dark-metal weight. The two Christians on guitars keep it simple, crash and shimmer, no wank. Mauro on vocals goes from raw to this emotional atmospheric thing that actually sounds honest. Daniele on bass and synths holds the low end steady, and Teo “Bonzo” Bonassi on drums just plays natural.

They recorded it at Magnitude Recording Studio in Seregno with Matteo Magni. The sound is decent, gritty but you can still hear everything.

“Burn” starts things off tense. “The Rise” is the big explosion part. “F.F.M.” keeps pushing. The quieter tracks like “Mirror Moon” and “Vega” slow it down. “Malibu”, “Heartbroken” and “Broken Glass” close it heavy. The digital-only dark-rock version of Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black” fits okay as a bonus.

A couple of spots drag a little. But it’s a solid debut that feels real. No trends, no bullshit. If you like that emotional dark alternative with grunge in it, give it a spin. I liked it more than I expected.
