Well… Norwegian band White Tundra have only been around since 2023, but their second record already feels like they’re finding their own lane in the heavy underground.
Stories from the Dark is six tracks of thick, fuzzy heavy rock that mixes stoner groove, doom weight and a distinct cold Nordic flavour. It’s not pure desert rock, not full-on doom, and not retro hard rock either – it sits somewhere in the middle with its own personality. There’s a lot of rumbling low-end, big echoing guitars and vocals that sit right in that gritty, storytelling sweet spot.
What really stands out is the atmosphere. These songs feel like travelling through different landscapes: dry desert heat one minute, then suddenly you’re lost in misty northern woods with old folklore lurking in the background. The lyrics pick up straight from the first album – escaping everyday society, heading into the unknown, mixing in local Norwegian stories. It never feels cheesy or overdone, it just matches the music.
Recorded with Rhys Marsh, the production lets the fuzz and heaviness sit nicely without sounding polished to death. It’s loud when it needs to be, murky in the right places, and the drums cut through nicely.
This isn’t a revolutionary record that will change the genre, but it’s a really solid, enjoyable album. If you’re into bands that bring heavy riffs with mood and a bit of character – think Red Fang’s energy mixed with Witchcraft’s darkness and a Scandinavian chill – then White Tundra should be on your radar.
