Witching Riffs: Behind the Sound of Greengoat

Introduction: Due to time constraints as regular individuals running Witching Buzz and focusing primarily on writing reviews, we are limited to publishing only one (occasionally two) review(s) per day. However, we strongly believe in providing greater exposure to deserving bands and musicians who have put in immense effort. As a result, we have launched a new section called “Witching Riffs: Behind the Sound.” In this section, we have crafted a series of intriguing questions that we pose to every band or musician who wishes to share more about their unique projects. While the questions remain the same for each participant, the diversity among bands ensures that the answers will be fascinating and diverse. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this captivating journey as we delve into the minds and stories of these talented artists.

Greengoat / Spain

What drew you to the immersive and hypnotic sounds? How do you aim to captivate your listeners with this genre?
The allure of immersive and hypnotic sounds lies in their capacity to transport listeners to a distinct sonic realm. Our goal is to captivate our audience by skilfully blending distorted textures, ambient layers, and compelling rhythms, creating an entrancing atmosphere that resonates and lingers.

Can you share the story behind your band name? How does it reflect the essence of your music?
Greengoat speaks of the strange, the unique. That part of the imagination that manages to transform from a mere thought into something tangible.

What are some unconventional or unexpected influences that have shaped your unique blend?
Many! From reggae to flamenco, classical music to bossa nova… we both listen to everything, and we’ve always believed that inspiration can be found anywhere.

How do you approach creating expansive and atmospheric soundscapes? What techniques or methods do you employ to achieve that signature vibe?
Sometimes, we start with an idea, like AI, and develop stories that we then try to convey through music. Other times, we create a melody that later inspires a narrative. Whether it’s with the piano or the guitar, and occasionally incorporating electronic bases and atmospheres, we aim to add even more depth to our sound. We enjoy exploring various sounds and textures.

Are there specific themes or emotions you seek to convey through your music? How do alternative music help you express those concepts effectively?
All our songs have a story behind them. We strive to translate these narratives into sound, which leads us to constantly experiment and improvise. It’s a very enjoyable and interesting process for us.

Share a remarkable moment or incident from your journey as a band that exemplifies the spirit of your music.
The origin of our new album, AI. We had been exploring the concept of artificial intelligence for a while (Ivan had worked with this technology years ago, and it was something we often discussed), crafting the narrative behind the songs. Then, ChatGPT made headlines, sparking a significant debate. We felt it was the right time to delve into this topic! This Greengoat thing of ideas that materialize.

In what ways do you envision your music progressing or evolving in the future? Are there any new elements or experimental approaches you’d like to incorporate?
We have already something new in the pipeline and we have learned a lot from creating this album so we’ll likely incorporate new elements, perhaps even some tribal instruments or others. We still have much to explore.

Is there a particular song in your discography that perfectly encapsulates the essence of your music? Please elaborate on its creation and significance.
“The Seed” was a significant piece for us; it’s where we learned the most about our own sound and how we could translate our concept into music.

Are there any emerging or lesser-known artists within your music genre realm that you find inspiring or deserving of more recognition? Feel free to share their names and what you appreciate about their work.
There are many! For example, the Spanish band Electric Monolith – they are incredible musicians with tremendous groove. But there are many more. In fact, on our label Argonauta Records, we share a roster with a bunch of amazing artists.

What do you hope listeners experience or feel when they immerse themselves in your compositions? Is there a specific mood or sensation you aim to evoke?
Depth, intensity, energy. I believe these are the emotions that we most often feel ourselves with our music.
